Michael Hussey announces retirement - Cricket News Update

Michael Hussey has decided to call time on his international career following the conclusion of Australia?s ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka.

The left-hander?s decision comes as a surprise to many, after the national team lost the services of former skipper Ricky Ponting at the end of the South African series earlier in the month.

The upcoming Sydney Test, which begins from January 3, will be his 79^th but unfortunately will also be his last for the Down Under giants. He is expected to carry on playing for his domestic sides, notably Warriors and Perth Scorcher, before making a call at the end of the current season.

"I was quite excited to tell them [his family] this morning that I'm not going to go away and play for Australia anymore. They were happy but not as excited as I thought they were going to be, so it was a bit of a shock," Hussey told Channel Nine. "One thing about playing for Australia is, it's always a lot of stress and a lot of pressure to perform and I feel like I'll come into this Test match [Sydney] with no pressure whatsoever, just go out there and enjoy it."

Commonly known as Mr Cricket, his absence will greatly dent Australia?s aspiration to claim the no.1 Test ranking and regain the Ashes trophy.? The Kangaroos will travel to India in February before touring arch-rivals England in middle of next year.

That further leaves the management with a task to reconstruct the middle-order, which is now expected to have at least one more new name. Phillip Hughes was recently named as Ponting?s permanent replacement in the Test side, and he is likely to be joined by his former New South Wales teammate, Usman Khawaja, who had been included in the squad as a cover for skipper Michael Clarke.

"Michael has had a fine career - he has been a great player, a great team player and has always been a great person, on and off the field," CA chairman Wally Edwards said.

Since making his debut in 2004, the 37-year-old featured in 185 ODIs for his side, scoring 5442 runs at an impressive average of 48.15. In the longer version, his current tally stands at 6138 at 51.52.

TwitPic and some Twitter pages blocked behind Google's anti-malware curtain without explanation

Popular Twitter-based photo service TwitPic is currently being blocked by Google's malware checker. Upon trying to access TwitPic.com, the service's Twitter page, any Twitter page containing a TwitPic, or any webpage with a TwitPic widget, users are presented with a "Malware Ahead!" warning that urges them to turn back. The site is currently listed as "suspicious" by Google's Safe Browsing tool, even though it also states that suspicious content hasn't been found on the service in the past 90 days. TwitPic responded to the situation on Twitter, saying that it is currently trying to contact Google to remove the malware warning because "it is not true." We've asked Google and TwitPic to provide more information on the cause of the disruption.

Kickstarter phenom Ouya starts shipping game consoles for devs ...

Ouya, an open $99 gaming console built off of Android, raised $8.6 million on Kickstarter. And now it?s shipping 1,200 consoles to developers, who can begin to create games for the system using Ouya?s SDK.

Despite concerns that Kickstarter wonder Ouya, an Android-based TV gaming console,?might not deliver, the project is hitting its deadlines with the release on Friday of 1,200 developer consoles.

Ouya announced that the development kits were being shipped to developers, who can also access the Ouya SDK (ODK) online under a free Apache license.

The release of the hardware and software should give developers time to prepare games for the platform, which is expected to be released to the public around March. That?s still the milestone that everyone will be watching but the signs look good for Ouya to make it there.

An early look at the Ouya UI

The company has been under a lot of scrutiny since it debuted as a Kickstarter project in July. The $99 console, built off the Android platform, raised $8.6 million from more than 63,000 backers. That has raised expectations and also concerns about whether the system is for real and can deliver as promised. We chatted with CEO and?founder Julie Uhrman shortly after the launch ? she assured us that it wasn?t rocket science putting Ouya together and that she was confident Ouya will hit the market by this spring.

The developer console still has plenty of bugs, Ouya has warned developers, and the triggers and D-pad on the controller are not final. Developers will also get a look at an early version of the console UI.

Following a recent CNN report that most of the biggest Kickstarter projects were shipping late, it?s nice to see that Ouya is keeping to its promise. We still don?t know what the quality and experience is like and what the game library will ultimately be. And as Kickstarter has pointed out, it?s not always important that projects ship on time if the end result suffers. But this thing looks like it?s for real.

Strike likely averted at East Coast ports

NEW YORK (AP) ? The union for longshoremen along the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico has agreed to extend its contract for 30 days, averting a possible strike that could have crippled operations at ports that handle about 40 percent of all U.S. container cargo, a federal mediator announced Friday.

The extension came after the union and an alliance of port operators and shipping lines resolved one of the stickier points in their months-long contract negotiations, involving royalty payments to the longshoremen for each container they unload.

Negotiations will continue until at least midnight Jan. 28. Some important contract issues remain to be resolved, but the head of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, George Cohen, said the agreement on royalties was "a major positive step forward."

"While some significant issues remain in contention, I am cautiously optimistic that they can be resolved in the upcoming 30-day extension period," he said.

The terms of the royalty agreement were not announced.

The master contract between the International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance originally expired in September. The two sides agreed to extend it once before, for 90 days, but it had been set to expire again at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

As recently as Dec. 19, the president of the longshoremen, Harold Daggett, had said a strike was expected.

A work stoppage would have idled shipments of a vast number of consumer products, from electronics to clothing, and kept U.S. manufacturers from getting parts and raw materials delivered easily.

Business groups expressed relief that the two sides had agreed to keep the ports open.

"A coast-wide port shutdown is not an option. It would have severe economic ramifications for the local, national and even global economies and wreak havoc on the supply chain," said National Retail Federation President Matthew Shay.

Major ports that would have been frozen included the massive terminals serving New York City overseen by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and critical seaports in Savannah, Ga., Houston, and Hampton Roads, Va.

New York Shipping Association President Joseph Curto said avoiding a strike is critical "to thousands of workers who depend on port activities for their livelihood."

Other ports that would have been affected by a strike are in Boston; the Philadelphia area; Baltimore; Wilmington, N.C.; Charleston, S.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Port Everglades, Fla.; Miami; Tampa, Fla.; Mobile, Ala.; and New Orleans.

Longshoremen on the West Coast have a separate collective bargaining agreement.

When Lions return man Stefan Logan fielded a kick at the 4-yard line on Saturday against the Falcons, he did something extraordinarily stupid: He took a knee and downed it. At the 4-yard line.

TV cameras caught Lions coach Jim Schwartz calling that, ?the f?king stupidest thing I?ve ever seen.? Now Logan has been benched.

?I won?t be [returning kicks] this Sunday,? Logan confirmed today. ?I?m mad, but at the same time there?s nothing I can do about that. That?s coach?s decision. I blame myself. I?m not blaming the coaches, I blame myself. I?m my worst critic.?

Logan didn?t have much of an explanation for why he downed the ball.

?It was a messed up play by me and I have to live with it and move on from it. It?s just a bad play by me and I have to pay the consequences and I have to live with it. I just have to work through it and just be ready for whenever your opportunity comes back up,? Logan said.

Schwartz said that if Logan can?t be trusted not to down the ball at the 4-yard line, then he can?t be trusted to return kicks.

?Part of a returner?s job is to know where he is on the field. Saying ?I didn?t know where I was, I thought I was in the end zone,? is not a valid excuse. Your job as a returner is to know where you are on the field, particularly after we had gotten a safety,? Schwartz said.

Frankly, Schwartz?s decision to bench Logan is long overdue, regardless of his bonehead play last week. Logan is dead last in the NFL with a 21.3-yard kickoff return average and 16th with a 9.1-yard punt return average, and he has six fumbles this season.

Still, Logan is confident in himself going forward.

?Things happen. I didn?t lose the game,? Logan said. ?The game was already over. So it?s not like I lost the game for us, but you can look at it however you want to look at it. We?ve all struggled as a team so far. Not just one individual. I?m like the quarterback on special teams. When the camera goes on special teams it comes straight to me so if anything happens on special teams as far as muffing a punt or a guy running into me or something like that it?s going to be my fault because the light is on me.?

The reality is that Logan is wrong when he says the game was over. It wasn?t over. The Lions were losing by 13 points with 1:21 remaining at the time of Logan?s blunder, so they certainly weren?t in good shape, but teams have come back from being down 13 with 1:21 remaining and gone on to win. In fact, just this season the Lions came back to force overtime after trailing the Titans by more than 13 with less than 1:21 remaining. In that game, Logan fielded a kick with the Lions down by 14 with 1:16 remaining. Fortunately for the Lions, when Logan downed that kick he really was in the end zone. (Apparently Logan thought at the time that the game was over, but his teammates still fought their way back into it.)

Logan?s ?the game was already over? statement doesn?t speak well for his competitiveness, but Logan said he still expects to be an NFL return man in 2013.

?I?ll just keep moving forward whether it?s with Detroit or another team,? he said.

Given Schwartz?s comments about Logan, it will probably not be with Detroit.

A Pentagon spokesman, Lt. Col. Todd Breasseale, said that at the State Department's request, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta had directed U.S. Africa Command to evacuate U.S. citizens and designated foreign nationals from the U.S. Embassy in Bangui "to safe havens in the region."

State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said the U.S. Embassy had temporarily suspended operations, but not diplomatic relations with the country.

"This decision is solely due to concerns about the security of our personnel and has no relation to our continuing and long-standing diplomatic relations" with the Central African Republic, Ventrell said in a statement.

Shortly after announcing the evacuation Thursday, the State Department warned U.S. citizens against travel to the Central African Republic, saying it could not "provide protection or routine consular services to U.S. citizens" and urging Americans who have decided to stay to "review their personal security situation and seriously consider departing" on commercial flights. Four days earlier, the State Department had issued a warning recommending against travel to the country and authorizing its non-emergency personnel in Bangui to leave.

U.S. officials said about 40 people were evacuated on an U.S. Air Force plane bound for Kenya. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the details of the operation.

The departure of Ambassador Laurence Wohlers and his staff comes as the president of the Central African Republic on Thursday urgently called on France and other foreign powers to help his government fend off rebels who are quickly seizing territory and approaching this capital city, but French officials declined to offer any military assistance.

Rebels have seized at least 10 towns across the sparsely populated north, and residents in the capital of 600,000 people fear insurgents could attack at any time.

The developments suggest the Central African Republic could be on the brink of another violent change in government, something not new to the impoverished country. The current president, Francois Bozize, himself came to power nearly a decade ago in the wake of a rebellion.

Speaking to crowds in Bangui, Bozize pleaded with foreign powers to do what they could. He pointed in particular to France, Central African Republic's former colonial ruler.

About 200 French soldiers are already in the country, providing technical support and helping to train the local army, according to the French defense ministry.

French President Francois Hollande said Thursday that France wants to protect its interests in Central African Republic and not Bozize's government. Paris is encouraging peace talks between the government and the rebels.

President Barack Obama late last year sent about 100 U.S. special operations forces to the region ? including Central African Republic ? to assist in the hunt for Joseph Kony, the fugitive rebel leader of the notorious Lord's Resistance Army. Forces have been hunting the elusive warlord in Central African Republic, South Sudan and Congo.

George Chanos: Even Fundamental Rights Are Subject to Certain Limitations

The unimaginable tragedy that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School will forever change who we are as Americans and what we stand for as a nation.

It was a tragedy that stole 26 innocent lives -- 20 of which, as hard as it is to imagine, were only 6- or 7-years-old. This horrific tragedy shocked the nation's collective conscience.

The gunman was a 20-year-old boy who, based on his actions and early reports, appears to have been mentally ill. He lived with his mother. A mother who owned, used and exposed her children to assault weapons. A mother who died from multiple gun shot wounds to the head, inflicted by her son, before he went on his killing spree.

We are now witnessing a national debate about why this happened. As this debate continues, advocates on all sides will argue the many causes that may have contributed to the unendurable losses at Newtown. The pervasive availability of assault weapons will rightfully lead the list of most who attempt to answer the question, "Why?" And these attempts to lay the blame on the accessibility of assault weapons, will be met with a deafening cry from those who understandably strive to protect our rights under the Second Amendment.

Gun advocates will argue, "Guns don't kill people -- people kill people." Gun control proponents will respond: "No. People with guns kill people." Many of each side's arguments have merit. Others will attempt to reframe or misdirect the focus of the debate. Still others will remain blinded by their ingrained prejudices, economic interests and/or deeply held beliefs. Emotions will run high and high-priced lobbyists, armed with political contributions, will run rampant. Ultimately, the battle to ban assault weapons will end at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Hopefully, the Justices will agree that even our most fundamental rights, such as those found in the Second Amendment, have certain essential and inherent limitations -- limitations which are necessitated by certain equally important rights, such as the rights of a 6-year-old to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Rights that are undeniably infringed upon, at least to some extent, by allowing unfettered rights under the Second Amendment. While the Second Amendment is and should always remain a fundamental right, it is not, cannot and should not be seen as an absolute right without limitation. Just as our First Amendment rights are subject to certain limitations so, too, must our Second Amendment rights be understood to be similarly limited.

A ban on assault weapons is a reasonable, necessary and appropriate limitation on our rights under the Second Amendment. It is a limitation that will help to protect, at least to some degree, the lives of our children. Limiting access to assault weapons will not prevent similar atrocities. At best, it may lessen the impact of similar killing sprees by reducing the number of lives lost. That alone is sufficient to justify a ban on assault weapons. But we need to understand that this will not solve the problem. This complicated, multidimensional problem will require an inspired, multifaceted solution.

It will require inspired thinking and unprecedented action. It will require a reconsideration of our approach to mental illness.

Our national obsession with violence will also need to be considered. It will require a reexamination of the commercial exploitation of violence in music, television and film. It will also require that we reassess the potential impact of violent video games on our children. School security protocols and school policies on physical and cyber bullying will need to be addressed. The smoldering problems of gang violence and youth unemployment will also require inspired solutions. This is by no means an exhaustive list. But it's a good start. All of these issues arguably contribute to the problem of violence in America.

As we search for a solution, other considerations will inevitably emerge. How proposed changes may affect our rights under the First Amendment and how we expect to fund necessary changes, given the state of our economy, will prove to be the primary obstacles. Partisan politics and the grotesque influence of money in politics will provide additional hurdles. We will see some action out of Washington, but it won't be enough. Yet even that must not deter us.

We are far from powerless as a people. But in order for our voices to be heard we must get involved in the debate. We alone ultimately control and bear responsibility for our future.

Some have asked, why didn't Adam Lanza simply take his own life, rather than kill his mother and 26 innocent victims, only to then take his own life? It has been suggested that many of those involved in mass shootings externalize their pain. They blame others for their suffering. What can we learn from that?

The lesson is as simple as it is important. Don't blame others for your misfortune. Accept responsibility for your condition. And teach your children to do the same. This was a lesson that was apparently lost on Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old Newtown shooter. And it is perhaps the most important lesson we can learn from the tragedy at Newtown.

If you don't want to live in a violent society, stop buying and exposing your children to guns. Stop buying your children violent video games. Stop allowing them to watch violent programing and listen to violent music. Stop allowing your children to bully other children and don't allow them to be the subject of bullying.

If you can't control your children -- seek help. Contact the health professionals at your children's schools. Speak to your child's pediatrician. Ask for help. Acknowledge the problem and do everything you can to address it.

And understand that your responsibility doesn't end there. If you don't agree with this nation's gun control laws, then demand that your elected representatives change them.

If your elected representatives are non-responsive to your needs, then vote them out of office. If you don't want lobbyists stealing your country then demand comprehensive, publicly funded, campaign finance reform.

In sum, accept responsibility for your condition and do something about it. Don't blame others. And, teach your children to do the same.
