Dennis Fisher of the Kaspersky Lab Security News Service reports that?researchers recently discovered a new security attack which relies on "two separate pieces of malware, a malicious Word document and some techniques for maintaining persistence on compromised machines." These attacks are specifically?targeting Mac users, he explains.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

Despite the attack method being rather new, it actually relies on a three-year-old vulnerability in the way Microsoft Office for Mac deals with certain types of Microsoft Word Files. According to Jaime Blasco of AlienVault Labs, an attacker needs to send a "specially crafted Word file" to a user and have some patience. Once that individual opens the malicious file, the attacker could take complete control of his or her system:

An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

As usual, extreme vigilance is the best way to avoid becoming a victim to?a security attack such as this one. Be careful when opening files you've received. Are they from individuals you trust? Are they files you've been expecting? Use common sense and don't immediately peek at every random file.

A recent Wall Street Journal article reports that seller financing is more common in small business sales. One of my favorite boat supply online stores has closed, and the story is worth repeating to all business owners.? The founder of this company sold the business and took a note as partial payment.? The new owners have defaulted on the note, closed down the business, and the old owner is now facing re-opening the shop to recoup some of the money he should have been paid.

The same thing happened to a friend of mine who sold a business a few years ago, and he?s now behind the banks in priority to get paid from the few remaining assets of the business.

Before criticizing the practice, remember there are good reasons for the sale of a business on a note:

1. Seller financing increases the number of potential buyers
2. Seller financing increases the likely purchase price (assuming the buyer pays off the note!)
3. Seller financing give the seller a stake in the success of the new owner, which is likely to help with transition issues.
4. Seller financing signals to the buyer that the owner is confident that the business will succeed under new ownership.

The downside, of course, is the the seller gets a note rather than cash.? Here are some steps to take to reduce your risk when you sell the business:

1. Get a substantial portion of the price in cash up front.? If you don?t, you are merely giving away an option, not selling the business.
2. Ask yourself if the buyer really does have the skills and temperament necessary to succeed.
3. Run a credit check on the buyer.
4. Ask if the buyer has other assets that can be pledged to secure the loan.
5. Set up some loan covenants, such as the buyer needing to maintain a certain level of working capital or a particular level of net worth.? That allows you to step in early if the business starts going downhill.? (You may need to ask a banker for advice; they do this sort of thing all the time.)
6. Demand regular audits to ensure compliance with the covenants, and also that the business is being run honestly.? If you need to take the business back, it?s imperative that you not have to clean up ethical issues left behind by the buyer.
7. Stay in touch with major customers.? Know if they are unhappy or cutting back their orders.
8. Sketch out a contingency plan for taking back the business.? There may well be some simple things that will help you if worse comes to worst.? Think it through ahead of time.
9. Do not sail around the world, trusting that all will turn out well (unless you can afford to walk away from the unpaid balance on the loan.)

EU imposes sanctions on Assad's wife, relatives

BRUSSELS (AP) ? EU foreign ministers imposed sanctions Friday on Asma Assad, the stylish, British-born wife of the Syrian president, banning her from traveling to European Union countries and freezing any assets she may have there.

The foreign ministers also imposed the same sanctions on President Bashar Assad's mother, sister and sister-in-law, and eight government ministers, in a continuing attempt to stop the bloody crackdown on opposition in the country.

In addition, the assets of two Syrian companies have been frozen, an EU official said. Bashar Assad himself has been the subject of EU sanctions since May.

Also Friday, the United Nations' top human rights body sharply condemned the crackdown and the U.N. announced that the joint U.N.-Arab League envoy, Kofi Annan, would travel to Russia and China for more talks aimed at resolving the crisis peacefully.

The U.N. estimates that more than 8,000 people have been killed since an uprising began in Syria a year ago.

The EU has imposed 12 previous rounds of sanctions against the Syrian regime, yet the crackdown has only intensified.

But French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said he believes the regime is getting weaker. "Their economic situation becomes ever more difficult. Syria has few reserves," Juppe told reporters. "We think its economic situation will become untenable."

Asma Assad, 36, was born in London, spent much of her life there, and has British citizenship. She has been seen as the softer face of the ruling family ? an attractive and refined woman dubbed "chic" by France's Elle magazine and "sexy" by The Sun, Britain's top-selling tabloid.

In thousands of personal e-mails apparently intercepted by the Syrian opposition and published in newspapers earlier this month, Mrs. Assad demonstrated a love of expensive furniture, fine jewelry and Christian Louboutin shoes. In one email she was reported to have ordered ?35,000 ($46,300) worth of furniture and candlesticks from a Paris boutique.

"We had a certain number of indications ? I am sure it has not escaped you ? how the wife of President Assad uses her money. It is perhaps this that pushed us to toughen the sanctions," Juppe said.

A month before the start of the Syrian regime's brutal repression, Vogue magazine praised her for her charity work, calling her "A Rose of the Desert."

Asma Assad, who is of Syrian heritage, moved to the country in 2000 to marry the president, who had previously been an ophthalmologist in Britain.

Britain's Home Office said Friday that a British citizen subject to a EU travel ban could not be refused entry into the country.

But British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that "given that we are imposing an asset freeze on all of these individuals and a travel ban on other members of the same family and the regime, we are not expecting Mrs. Assad to try to travel to the United Kingdom at the moment."

Annan and two aides will go to Moscow and Beijing to press the case for his six-point plan, said his spokesman, Ahmad Fawzi. Western countries have pushed for U.N. Security Council action, but Russia and China have twice vetoed resolutions criticizing Assad's regime.

"Negotiations are at a very delicate stage. He's not going to mediate through the media," Fawzi said of Annan. "The crisis on the ground is severe. We have to make progress on the ground soon. Every minute counts."

Fawzi told reporters Friday that Annan's team is "currently studying the Syrian responses carefully and negotiations with Damascus continue."

On Wednesday, the U.N. Security Council issued a nonbinding statement calling for a cease-fire and endorsing Annan's plan, which includes continued talks and a daily two-hour halt in the fighting to provide aid.

Hague, speaking in Brussels, where the EU foreign ministers are meeting, said Friday that it is very important to increase pressure on the Syrian regime. "Their behavior continues to be murdering and totally unacceptable in the eyes of the world," he said.

In Geneva, on Friday, the 47-member U.N. Human Rights Council voted 41 to three in favor of an EU-sponsored resolution that was backed by Arab nations and the United States. China, Russia and Cuba voted against. Two countries abstained and one didn't vote.

The resolution condemns "widespread, systematic and gross violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms perpetrated by the Syrian authorities," including summary executions, torture and sexual abuse of detainees and children.

It also condemns "the deliberate destruction of hospitals and clinics, the obstruction and denial of medical assistance to the injured and sick, and the raids and killing of wounded protesters in both public and private hospitals."

The vote extends the mandate of a U.N. expert panel charged with reporting on alleged abuses in the country.

U.S. Ambassador Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe called the Geneva-based council's action an important development.

"For the first time, the council has asked its team of investigators to provide continuous mapping of both human rights violations and casualties," she said. "The council has also asked the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights to ensure the safe and secure storage of all evidence of human rights violations gathered. ... This is the first time such a request has been included in a Human Rights Council resolution."

Syria's ambassador, Fayssal al-Hamwi, rejected Friday's vote as "biased."

"It does not reflect the reality on the ground, on the contrary," he told the meeting.

The council's decisions aren't legally binding, but they are seen as an important indicator of the international community's stance on human rights issues.

Although North Korea isn't on the official agenda of next week's Nuclear Security Summit in the South Korean capital, here's a look at why the launch will be a major point of discussion when President Barack Obama and other world leaders gather in Seoul:

THE HISTORY

North Korea has spent decades trying to perfect a multistage, long-range rocket.

Next month's launch ? set to happen around the April 15 centennial of the birth of founder Kim Il Sung ? would be the fourth of its kind since 1998, when Pyongyang sent a long-range rocket hurtling over Japan.

A 2006 test was considered a failure, but North Korea grabbed attention shortly after with its first nuclear test blast. The U.N. Security Council later banned North Korea from any further nuclear or ballistic missile testing.

North Korea's third launch, in 2009, was considered a partial success, with two of the three stages pushing the rocket over the Pacific. The third stage failed, and, despite North Korea's claims of success, no satellite was put into orbit, the U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command said.

That test was condemned by the U.N. Security Council. Pyongyang protested that it was testing satellite technology for peaceful purposes. It subsequently abandoned six-nation nuclear disarmament talks and, weeks later, carried out a second nuclear test.

The next year saw violence blamed on North Korea that killed 50 South Koreans, including an attack on a warship and the North's shelling of a front-line island.

THE TECHNOLOGY

Experts and governments will scrutinize next month's launch of what the North's state media call an Unha-3 rocket, presumably the next version of the Unha-2 rocket used in the 2009 test.

Unha-2 represented a significant advancement over previous rockets, according to an analysis written by missile experts David Wright and Theodore Postol. It was roughly 100 feet (30 meters) long and may have been designed around Soviet missile components, the writers said.

Next month's rocket is set to fire from a new site on the North's west coast, according to GeoEye and Google Earth satellite imagery posted by Tim Brown, an analyst for GlobalSecurity.org. The Tongchang-ri site is about 35 miles (56 kilometers) from the Chinese border city of Dandong, across the Yalu River from North Korea.

Positioned only 45 miles (70 kilometers) from the North's main Yongbyon nuclear complex, it has better roads and facilities, and allows a southerly flight path that keeps the rocket from flying over other countries, according to Wright, technical researcher at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

The new rocket will probably have better boosters and engines ? and might even succeed in putting a satellite into space if it contains one, said Sohn Young-hwan, a South Korean rocket scientist who heads the privately funded Institute of Technology and Management Analysis in Seoul.

North Korea may have loaded the rocket's third stage with more fuel to increase capability, Wright said by email, part of improvements that "would translate to greater range if that technology was used to build a long-range ballistic missile."

North Korea says the launch is meant to contribute to "international trust and cooperation in the field of space scientific researches."

But because ballistic missiles and rockets in satellite launches "share the same bodies, engines, launch sites and other development processes, they are intricately linked," said Mark Fitzpatrick, an analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

THE HURDLES

So far, Pyongyang can only deliver a nuclear bomb "by boat, by van or by airplane, not by missile," said Hecker, the nuclear scientist.

After half a century of persistence, North Korea is thought to have a fairly small nuclear arsenal.

While it has enough plutonium for about four to eight "simple" bombs similar to what the U.S. dropped on Nagasaki in 1945, Hecker estimates, it doesn't yet appear to have the ability to make bombs small enough to mount on a missile.

Miniaturized warheads would require more nuclear tests, and Hecker warns that if North Korea breaks its nuclear test moratorium, "it will almost certainly be a test of a miniaturized design."

THE DIPLOMACY

Governments and experts are worried that a new rocket launch will spur a chain of events that will mirror 2009, resulting in a breakdown of diplomacy, another nuclear test and soaring tensions, threats and bloodshed.

The United States has warned the launch would jeopardize a diplomatic deal settled last month that would ship U.S. food aid to the impoverished North in exchange for a moratorium on missile and nuclear tests, as well as a suspension of nuclear work at Yongbyon.

U.S. officials will be pushing China to pressure its ally Pyongyang, and U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to raise the issue during a key meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the nuclear summit's sidelines. There could also be meetings among the U.S. and its Asian allies, Japan and South Korea.

Hecker says a launch "makes a mockery" of the U.S.-North Korea nuclear deal.

"You use the same technology in long-range rockets that you do in long-range missiles," he said. "The only difference is what you put on top."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Though painful for retailers early on, this winter's warm weather later turned into a boon.

Sales of cold-weather gear were well below expectations, leaving stores with piles of boots and coats and snow shovels to mark down and push out in December and January. But warm-weather items started selling well in February, long before they usually do.

The latest retail sales data from market research firm Planalytics Inc., whose clients include major discounters, department stores and clothing chains, show brisk sales of shorts, live plants and other springtime goods from Feb. 1 through Tuesday. Planalytics uses weather patterns to advise stores what they should buy to sell to customers.

Stores often get a big lift from the arrival of spring, but this year's unusually high temperatures brought that boost sooner than usual. Spring didn't officially begin until Tuesday.

"Warm weather matters more than ever," in this economy, says Scott A. Bernhardt, chief operating officer of Planalytics, which held a conference call Thursday with members of the news media and its retail clients.

It said sales of T-shirts rose 8 percent from a year earlier, while sandals rose 4 percent and sales of shorts rose 6 percent. Live plants have enjoyed a 10 percent gain. The figures compare sales at stores open at least a year, a key indicator of retailers' financial health because it isn't skewed by recent store openings and closings.

Similarly, the International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Index showed Tuesday that revenue at stores open at least a year rose 3.3 percent for the week that ended Saturday. The index includes 24 major stores including Macy's Inc. and Costco Wholesale Corp.

Retailers plan to report April 5 on their sales this March compared with a year earlier. ICSC expects an overall rise of anywhere from 3 percent to 5 percent. A gain of at least 3 percent is considered solid.

Analysts usually look at March and April combined to get a better picture of spending ? in part because of the weather changes but mostly because the Easter and Passover holidays, which can produce significant revenue, shift between the months from one year to the next.

Planalytics' Bernhardt said this could be the warmest March since weather data started being tracked 117 years ago.

Whether shoppers will keep spending all spring ? or perhaps the sales just came early this year ? isn't yet known. Another key question is whether rising gas prices will make shoppers pull back on other items.

"We will continue to watch the effect of rising gasoline prices on consumers' discretionary budgets in the coming weeks," said Michael P. Niemira, chief economist at the ICSC.

Perhaps most salient to Kroes' agenda was Orange's promise to offer customers a privacy "dashboard" by the year 2015, allowing them to more directly control their personal data. In Africa and the Middle East, meanwhile, the company is looking to roll out its 3G network by the year 2015, in the hopes of providing 80 percent of the population with mobile services. School denies American shot in Yemen proselytized

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? The school employing an American teacher gunned down in Yemen has denied accusations that he was proselytizing Christianity.

A text message that circulated by mobile phone in Yemen said that "holy warriors" had killed "a senior missionary" in the central city of Taiz, shortly after the teacher was shot dead Sunday by two gunmen on a motorcycle.

It was impossible to confirm the claim of responsibility. Al-Qaida and other militant groups are active in Yemen, which has suffered a breakdown of central state authority during the country's yearlong uprising.

Taiz security director Ali al-Saidi said Monday that the investigation is still ongoing.

A statement from the International Training Development Centre in Taiz identified the victim as Joel Shrum, an American development worker living in Yemen with his wife and two children since 2010.

The school denied that Shrum was proselytizing, saying that he "highly respected" Islam. It said Muslims and Christians work together on "human development, skill transfer and community development" projects there and that religious and political debates are not permitted.

The release said the school "is calling on the Yemeni people to rise up and rejects the hatred and violence in their country."

The (Lancaster) Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era (http://bit.ly/FPIqYv) identified Shrum, 30, as a former resident of the central Pennsylvania town of Mount Joy.

Shrum's father told the newspaper his son loved his job. "He was just motivated by especially seeing people coming out of poverty," James Shrum said.

Joel Shrum had last talked to his family on Friday, discussing a planned vacation together this summer, the newspaper reported.
