World's largest release of comprehensive human cancer genome data helps speed discoveries

World's largest release of comprehensive human cancer genome data helps speed discoveries

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

To speed progress against cancer and other diseases, the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital ? Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project today announced the largest-ever release of comprehensive human cancer genome data for free access by the global scientific community. The amount of information released more than doubles the volume of high-coverage, whole genome data currently available from all human genome sources combined. This information is valuable not just to cancer researchers, but also to scientists studying almost any disease.

The release of this data was announced as a part of a perspective published in Nature Genetics online May 29.

The 520 genome sequences released today are matched sets of normal and tumor tissue samples from 260 pediatric cancer patients. The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project is expected to sequence more than 1,200 genomes by year's end. Each sample is sequenced at a quality control level known as 30-fold coverage, ensuring maximum accuracy. St. Jude researchers are analyzing the genomic sequences to determine the differences between each child's normal and cancerous cells to pinpoint the causes of more than a half-dozen of the most deadly childhood cancers, an effort which has already produced a number of key discoveries reported in top scientific journals.

"This effort has generated more discoveries than we thought possible," said James Downing, M.D., St. Jude scientific director who leads the project at St. Jude. "We want to make this information available to the broader scientific community so that, collectively, we can explore new treatment options for these children. By sharing the information even before we analyze it ourselves, we're hoping that other researchers can use this rich resource for insights into many other types of diseases in children and adults."

Launched in early 2010, the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project is the world's largest effort and investment to date to understand the genetic origins of childhood cancers. The three-year project will cost an estimated $65 million. St. Jude is covering $55 million of the cost, including a $20 million commitment from Kay Jewelers, a long-standing partner of St. Jude. This is the first major privately funded human genome sequencing project to share its data as soon as it becomes available. To date, this type of open access has largely been restricted to government-funded efforts. Non-government efforts are typically treated as proprietary.

"Setting this precedent reflects a commitment to freely sharing information that has been a hallmark of St. Jude since we opened our doors 50 years ago," said Dr. William Evans, St. Jude director and CEO. "The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project is a one-of-a-kind effort, so the information has the potential to accelerate disease research worldwide."

Researchers worldwide will be able to access the sequence data via the Web-based European Genome-Phenome Archive, which provides large datasets for free access by researchers on request: www.ebi.ac.uk/ega/organisations/EGAO00000000046.

While most cancer genome initiatives focus only on genes, which make up a small portion of the genome, the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project researchers have taken a different approach. They are sequencing the entire genome ? all the DNA ? in each patient's tumor. This provides a richer, more complete picture of the DNA changes underlying the development and progression of each patient's disease.

"This approach has been more valuable that anyone could have predicted," says Richard K. Wilson, Ph.D., director of The Genome Institute at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "We have identified unusual, 'cryptic' changes in many patients' cancer cells that we would not have found using other methods. We are pleased to be able to share this data with the research community in hopes that others can build upon our initial discoveries."

The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project has already yielded significant insights into aggressive childhood cancers of the retina, brainstem and blood published in leading international scientific journals. Project researchers working on the eye tumor retinoblastoma discovered clues to the tumor's rapid development that enabled them identify a promising new anti-cancer agent. Investigators studying a deadly childhood leukemia known as early T-precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ETP-ALL) found unexpected genetic alterations that could change diagnosis and treatment for patients with this disease. Efforts to understand the genetic changes underlying a brainstem tumor called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) found that a startling 78 percent of the tumors carried changes in two genes not previously tied to cancer. Most recently, project researchers identified a gene mutation associated with a chronic and often fatal form of neuroblastoma?a discovery that provides the first clue about the genetic basis of the long-recognized but poorly understood link between treatment outcome and age at diagnosis.

"These findings would not have been possible without the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project," said Downing. He said these results offer new strategies for finding and treating these high-risk cancers. The project has also demonstrated the marked differences between pediatric and adult cancers, underscoring the importance of developing therapies specifically for childhood cancers.

PHILIPPINES: Proudly ?Pinoy? Views on Attachment Parenting ...

Photo of the author and her then 5-month old son

I won?t go into the old news that is Time?s controversial ?mom enough? mid-May issue. We all know they sold enough copies on that matter.

Instead, I wanted to share some views on attachment parenting and breastfeeding expressed by fellow Filipino moms.

To begin, let me say that I am a babywearing,?formerly nursing mom (my son recently weaned?after being breastfed for two years and six months). In fact, here?s a photo of me a year and a half ago, when my son was just five months old.

Here in the Philippines, we are not new to the concept of babywearing and breastfeeding.

Velvet?Escario?Roxas, a breastfeeding counselor and representative of Arugaan (ah-roo-ga-an), a non-governmental, WHO-funded organization that conducts breastfeeding training for the Philippine Department of Health, gave a good picture of this when she posted a recent ?Facebook status update on the fan page of the popular breastfeeding blog, Chronicles of a Nursing Mom:

?Our Pinoy [colloquialism for "Filipino] ancestors have been doing these things since the beginning of time. We call it the Filipino way of living or raising of children. They on the other hand modernized it and called it attachment parenting. Look at the indigenous folks of the mountain provinces.

Photo courtesy of Francisco Guerrero Photography, from The Painters? Wife blog.

They breastfeed their children to 7 years, co-sleep with their kids, use the baby slings (to feed, to protect the children from rice field snakes/rats etc). I have so much respect for our ancestors ? of their wisdom and knowledge and most especially on the care for infants/children.?

I try to be a good mom. I decided to become a work-at-home mom not because I believe that every mom should work from home so that she can care for her kid, but because?for me, this is what works.?I do not discount those women who choose to hold full-time jobs outside the home; in fact, I admire them for being able to do what I myself was not able to to effectively. I breastfed for a total of two years and six months, which I am?hugely?proud of. I know of other women who?ve worked full-time and have managed to raise happy, healthy and whole kids. ?The point is: We, as parents, will instinctively desire to be the best parents that we can be for our children.?Neva Santos of the popular parenting blog, Manila Mommy, summarizes this very well:

The [attachment parenting] style is instinctive. Not to trivialize how hard parenting is, but sometimes listening to your gut is the best, right? Follow your intuition, I say. But even with the emphasis on [attachment parenting] in discussions as a result of the Time cover, it also got people talking on other parenting styles and the only conclusion to all that talk is that?there is no one type that works for parents and children. Heck for different kids in the same family, different styles could? work.

Indeed. In the end, the only parenting ?style? that works is one that is grounded on love. Parents work hard to be the best providers, caregivers and educators they can for their kids. The end result ? the so called ?success? of one?s parenting ? is relative. ?Fellow blogger, breastfeeding, babywearing and attachment parenting advocate?(and also a friend), Eliza Santiago-Ypon of The Painters? Wife, was interviewed by a local broadsheet regarding her views on this matter, and she does a great job of encapsulating the fact that breastfeeding, in particular, is not the measure of success of a healthy family:

?No one should be made to feel they?re less if they don?t breastfeed. As a breastfeeding advocate, I will always try to promote breastfeeding and its benefits to anyone I meet, but at the end of the day, we?re all just trying to be good parents. I?ve met some who express regret and guilt that they didn?t breastfeed but have learned to move past it. They have great, healthy children. No one should make them feel they didn?t do the best they could.?

I don?t have much to add to what these ladies have said. ?I just wanted to say that, as moms, we?re not competing for a medal or honor or accolade.?We?re all part of one, big, global community, and we look out for our families based on what works for our families. The choices that make up my definition of parenting are what?work for me ? and that?s fine. I?m not a 100 percent attachment parenting practitioner, and I don?t intend to be, but this doesn?t make me any less of a successful mom.?Ultimately, I am beholden to my child for one thing only, and that is to love him wholly, unconditionally.

Whether people agree with my version of parenting or not, is fine. Just don?t ask me if I am ?mom enough?? because I will tell you?I am not just enough, I?m the only mom who can love my kid the way I can.

New study sounds warning on hormone replacement therapy

Women who are past menopause and healthy should not use hormone replacement therapy in hopes of warding off dementia, bone fractures or heart disease, says a new analysis by the government task force that weighs the risks and benefits of screening and other therapies aimed at preventing illness.

The recommendation by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force does not necessarily apply to women who use hormone replacement therapy to reduce menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. The balance of harm and benefits for that use is expected to be addressed soon in a report by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

The latest recommendation, published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, comes from an organization accustomed to controversy. In recent months, the task force has recommended against routine breast cancer screenings for most women younger than 50. It has also urged abandonment of the prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, test that has become a standard part of older men's yearly physicals.

Its latest recommendation could be a bit less controversial but is likely to have detractors among physicians who believe that the dangers of hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women have been overblown.

The recommendation is largely based on revised analyses of the landmark Women's Health Initiative, a 15-year study involving more than 160,000 women. It comes a decade after the study first linked hormone replacement therapy with higher rates of invasive breast cancer. Those initial findings prompted droves of women to abandon or avoid hormone therapy.

But a decade of subsequent research tempered much of the fear, and preliminary but conflicting studies had suggested that some postmenopausal women taking hormones might benefit from lower rates of bone fractures, dementia and heart disease.

The task force found limited evidence that hormones protect against bone fractures, and no evidence that they reduce the most probable threat ? heart disease. It also found that for most menopausal women using hormone therapy, the risk of developing dementia later in life actually rose a bit.

Against such sparse benefits, the panel weighed relatively new evidence of the risks, including a significantly higher rate of life-threatening blood clots in the legs and lungs, a greater probability of gallbladder disease and increased risk of urinary incontinence that persisted in studies for at least three years.

Dr. Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, chairwoman of the panel, said members took pains to put the possible benefits of hormone replacement therapy in context. One form of the therapy ? estrogen alone ? did appear to slightly reduce the incidence of breast cancer. Invasive breast cancer looms large as a concern to many women but affects just 11% of them after menopause.

That possible protective effect became less consequential when weighed against hormone therapy's effects on far more likely risks to women's health, said Bibbins-Domingo, professor of medicine and of epidemiology and biostatistics at UC San Francisco: It fails to reduce the risk of heart disease, which will affect 30% of women who live past menopause.

It slightly increased the likelihood of dementia, which will affect 22% of all postmenopausal women. It was linked to a higher likelihood of stroke, affecting 21% of these women. And although it slightly reduced the rate of hip fractures, which affect 15% of women past menopause, other medications can do that more effectively.

Today, 1 in 5 postmenopausal American women uses hormone replacement therapy, mostly to treat symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. That is about half the rate in 2002, when 40% took hormones. But as revisions to the Women's Health Initiative have relaxed widespread reticence about the medications among women and their physicians, hormone use appears to be creeping back up.

"You would think there wasn't much room for concern," said Dr. Rowan Chlebowski, the principal investigator for the Women's Health Initiative and a professor of medicine at UCLA's Harbor campus. "That's not exactly correct."

In the last year, the North American Menopause Society, healthcare professionals active in promoting the health of women as they make the transition out of childbearing years, has issued guidance on hormone therapy that has reopened the door to its widespread use, Chlebowski said.

"This [Preventive Services Task Force] recommendation kind of says, 'Not so fast.' ... It's a pretty sophisticated argument to make," Chlebowski said.

The task force said its decision to recommend against hormone therapy for prevention of chronic diseases was based on "at least fair" evidence that the harm outweighed the benefits, or that its use was ineffective. But Bibbins-Domingo, lead author of the report, said the panel struggled with two slightly different mixes of potential harm and benefits: those linked to standard hormone therapy, which includes estrogen and progestin and is used by most women; and those linked to estrogen alone, which is prescribed for women who have undergone uterus removal.

Estrogen alone appears to offer some benefits that estrogen-progestin does not. The task force found that for women past menopause, estrogen offers a small measure of protection against breast cancer, for reasons that are not yet well understood. Only women who have had hysterectomies can take estrogen alone because it has been linked to uterine cancer.

100 in 100 College Football Previews: No. 96 Temple Owls

Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

Today, we?re 96 days away from the kickoff of the 2012 college?football?season. As such, we?ll review the No. 96 team in our Rant?Sports?100 in 100 college?football?previews, the Temple Owls.

2012 will be a season of challenged for Steve Addazio?s team as they return a limited number of starters on both sides of the ball and re-enter the Big East Conference. There?s no doubt, however, that Addazio has Temple alumni and fans in Philadelphia firmly in his corner regardless of how the Owls finish this fall.

Impact Players

Offense

Dual-threat quarterback Chris Coyer will lead the offense for the Owls in 2012. Coyer?s elusiveness and ability to throw on the run are both vital to his continued success in igniting a Temple offense that will be looking for playmakers this fall to maintain momentum. ?Throwing on the run and escaping the pocket will be something Coyer will certainly be forced to do given the loss of four offensive linemen from 2011?s 9-4 squad.

Coyer will be surrounded by a solid strength and speed duo of running backs in Matt Brown and Kenny Harper. At 5?5?, Brown is a shifty and fleet speed back with great ability to hit holes and pick up a solid yards per carry average. Harper, on the other hand, is the bruiser who made a strong impression during spring practice and could in fact turn out to be a workhorse for the Owls this fall.

There also remains a slight possibility that Boston College transfer Montel Harris could get eligibility issues worked out in time to be able to suit up this fall, but there doesn?t really appear to be a consensus among Temple media that this is a certainty.

Coyer will look toward junior Deon Miller as his primary target in the passing game, but only by default, given that Miller is the leading receiver with 18 catches from 2011.

Temple?s offensive line concerns, however, outweigh all others that Steve Addazio will be forced to deal with as fall practice rolls around. Young, inexperienced players will be forced to step up and play serious minutes at a high level for any facet of the Owls? potentially powerful offense to be successful.

Defense

The Temple defense will be looking for plenty of new faces to step in and fill holes left by multiple players who are no longer a part of the program. Up front, the Owls lose five players who made a major impact not only in terms of their percentage of the overall number of tackles, but also in unquestioned leadership.

Several young men will have the chance to step up into much more extensive roles this season and make a mark on the defensive side of the football. Linebackers Ahkeem Smith and Nate D. Smith will be depended upon to be the second line of defense behind the inexperienced defensive line. The ?Smiths? have the type of impact ability to change a game, and their collective ability to get pressure in the backfield and disrupt opposing offenses will go a long way towards Temple?s defensive success in 2012.

Safeties Nate Smith and Justin Gildea will anchor a secondary which will be challenged consistently unless the new defensive front can beat opposing offensive lines off the snap.

In general, young players will need to step up for the Owls to have a substantial defensive presence and allow their clock-control, run-focused offense to stay on the field as long as possible to control possession and the flow of games.

Schedule

The first five games of the Owls? season will certainly set the tone for the team?s finish in 2012. Home contests to start the season against the Villanova Wildcats and Maryland Terrapins are both winnable, but could be more of a test than they appear to be on paper. Weeks 3 and 4, however, are the true test. Games against Penn State in Happy Valley and at home against the deceptive South Florida Bulls could show how prepared Addazio?s young troops are to take on 2012 and return to another first-tier bowl game.

In short, the young Temple Owls certainly will not be the 9-4 team of 2011 in terms of experience, but talent is not lacking. How well this talent translates to execution will tell the tale at Lincoln Financial this fall.

GOP makes Memorial Day pitch for jobs plan

The Republican radio address Saturday combined a Memorial Day tribute with a pitch for the GOP's economic plan and criticism of President Obama.

"We owe it to our service members to do everything we can to ensure they come home to a strong, growing economy that creates jobs and opportunities," said Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Kansas.

Jenkins scorned Obama's approach to jobs, energy, and health care, saying he relies too much on government spending programs and regulations.

The second-term House Republican said, "Americans are clamoring for optimistic leadership and a positive agenda to help get people back to work."

Obama has said GOP proposals for tax cuts and reduced regulations would benefit only the wealthy, and return the economy to the conditions that triggered the 2008 financial meltdown.

The Republican radio address:

"Hi, I'm Lynn Jenkins, I represent the Second Congressional District of Kansas, home to Fort Leavenworth, the oldest active Army post west of our nation's capital, Fort Riley, home of the Big Red One, the 190th Coyotes at Forbes Field; and nearly 12,000 National Guard and Reserve members.

It's an honor to speak with you on Memorial Day weekend, a time to pause and thank the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who have died in the defense of our country. As we honor the fallen, we pray for our sons and daughters who are risking their lives so that we may live in freedom and security.

Of course, we owe it to our service members to do everything we can to ensure they come home to a strong, growing economy that creates jobs and opportunities. Unfortunately, roughly 22 million of our fellow citizens are struggling to find a good-paying full-time job in President Obama's economy. Higher prices on everything from gas to groceries has added to the strain on families and small businesses.

Americans are clamoring for optimistic leadership and a positive agenda to help get people back to work, which is what Republicans' Plan for America's Job Creators provides. The Republican jobs plan is built around small businesses, not big government, and instead of short-term 'stimulus,' our plan emphasizes long-term growth.

This week, as part our jobs plan, my Republican colleagues and I spread out across the country to highlight the economic potential of our domestic energy resources. As part of this American Energy & Jobs Tour, I visited an oil well in Girard, Kansas -- a small town whose proud energy workers make a big contribution to our region's economy. Ours is a state that would be part of the Keystone XL pipeline, a job-creating project the president has repeatedly blocked.

An overwhelming majority of the American people and a bipartisan coalition in Congress supports Keystone, but right now it is stuck in a House-Senate conference committee due to opposition from the president and his allies in the Senate Democratic leadership. Republicans are holding strong for Keystone by insisting it should be included in any transportation legislation Congress sends to President Obama.

Because while the President demonizes home grown energy and pursues tax policies that advantage foreign energy over domestic, Republicans are working to make the United States the largest energy producing nation in the world, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs right here at home.

Our energy workers are the best around -- they can do this, if we remove government barriers to all forms of domestic energy production.

Our small businesses can thrive -- if we rein in the red tape and costly regulations that bog them down and keep them from investing and hiring new workers.

Our college graduates can enter the workforce with confidence -- if we repeal the health care law that is raising costs and making it harder to hire new workers.

Our children can grow up without the crushing burden of government debt -- if Washington stops spending money we don't have and starts operating on a real budget.

Through the Republican jobs plan, the House has voted to take these common-sense steps to sustained job growth and prosperity. Right now, there are nearly 30 House-passed jobs bills awaiting action in the Democratic-controlled Senate, giving President Obama a serious to-do list to tackle. Republicans continue to stand ready and willing to work with him on these priorities.

On Memorial Day, as we consider the sacrifices our service members and their families have made, we are reminded to never squander the blessings of liberty. That is why helping to create jobs and grow our economy will continue to be Republicans' focus in the weeks and months ahead. Thank you for taking time to listen. God bless the United States of America."

WINNERS FOR THE 2012 APRA MUSIC AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Wally De Backer Scores APRA?s Songwriting Trifecta!!!

World-beating songwriter Wally De Backer (aka Gotye) has tonight added to his accolades by taking out three APRA Music Awards, including the coveted, peer-voted APRA Song of the Year.

APRA (Australasian Performing Right Association) is proud to reveal the winners of the 2012 APRA Music Awards, announced this evening during a red carpet event at the Parkside Ballroom, Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre. Hosted by Jonathan Biggins and Missy Higgins, the awards have celebrated composers and songwriters across 12 categories who have achieved excellence in their
craft over the last year.

At tonight?s 30th anniversary event for the APRA Music Awards, Wally De Backer (and Luiz Bonfa?s) global smash hit Somebody That I Used To Know walked away with the top prize (APRA Song of the Year) and has also won the category of Most Played Australian Work. The APRA Board of Writer and Publisher Directors has also rewarded Wally De Backer with the crown of Songwriter of the Year. This caps off a
staggering year for Wally De Backer. His haunting break-up ode, Somebody That I Used To Know (from the album Making Mirrors) featuring a sample from Luiz Bonfa?s classic song Seville, has become a chart-topping hit in 11 countries around the world. It was number one for eight weeks on the Australian singles chart and recently hit the coveted number-one spot on the American Billboard chart ? a feat not achieved by an Australian artist since Savage Garden in 2000. It still sits atop the US Billboard chart, now for the 6th consecutive week. The single also won triple j?s Hottest 100 in 2011, took out Single of the Year, Best Pop Release and Best Video, with Gotye himself winning Best Male Artist and Producer of the Year at the 2011 ARIA Awards. The statistics on this song (and its accompanying video clip) grow daily, but what we?ve witnessed is a songwriter at the top of his game. Part fanatical recording boffin, part pop genius, Wally De Backer is the APRA 2012 Songwriter of the Year.

The APRA Board of Directors have named Killian Gavin, Jonathon Hart, Timothy Hart, David Hosking and Jacob Tarasenko (Boy & Bear) the Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year for their songwriting achievements on the debut album Moonfire. The phenomenal success of their 2010 EP, With Emperor Antarctica, transformed the Sydney quintet from promising newcomers to bonafide international sensations, helping them land two songs in triple j's 2010 Hottest 100. With all these accolades Boy & Bear found themselves perfectly placed to take things to the next level for their first full-length effort Moonfire. The first single Feeding Line led the way and saw Boy & Bear shift effortlessly into darker, deeper moods, melding huge atmospheres with sonic adventurousness. ?Honesty resonates,? says lead vocalist David Hosking. ?And I think that if it resonates with you as a writer, then it is going to resonate with the listener as well. I think that just happens naturally.?

Shane Nicholson, one of Australia?s most prolific songwriters, has taken out the Country Work of the Year category with Famous Last Words Music critics have been unanimous in their praise of Shane Nicholson and have delivered high praise for the lyrical depth of Shane?s songs and the extent of his honest and emotional vocal delivery.

The Blues & Roots Work of the Year has gone to first-time APRA nominees Busby Marou for the emotive Biding My Time from the band?s debut self-titled album. Hailing from Rockhampton, the duo of Tom Busby and Jeremy Marou last year won the Deadly Award for ?Most Promising New Talent in Music?. The duo are a rare musical talent with a distinctly Australian way of sharing stories has developed into a unique song writing flavour - roots tinged with cracking harmonies, breathtaking musicianship and a natural feel for each others guitars.

The Potbelleez (David Green, Ilan Kidron, Marisa Lock and Jonathan Murphy) along with co-writer Justin Shave has received the APRA Award in the category of Dance Work of the Year for From The Music, a song which reached number one on the ARIA Australian Singles chart, made it into the Top 100 Singles chart of 2011 and has achieved Platinum sales in Australia.

Marvin Priest, the son of reggae royalty Maxi Priest has taken out the category of Urban Work of the Year, along with co-writers Antonio Egizii and David Musumeci for Own This Club, Priest?s official debut solo single and collaboration with Sydney-based hit makers, DNA Songs. Own This Club peaked at #6 on the ARIA chart and stayed in the top 10 for 10 weeks with over 250,000 downloads.

Rock Work of the Year has gone to Birds of Tokyo for Wild at Heart, the third single from the band?s self-titled album. Featuring uplifting guitar riffs within dark and driving introspective rock lyrics, the single achieved Gold status and was voted number 47 in triple j?s Hottest 100 of
2010. More recently, in 2012 the band has been recording its new album in LA.

It is the second-highest-selling single in Australian history, and now the irresistibly catchy Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO (written by LMFAO members Skyler Gordy and Stefan Gordy along with co-writers David LIstenbee and Peter Schroeder) has won International Work of the Year. Heard in clubs and at parties all over the planet, the song has been number one on music charts around the globe including Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

AC / DC has won the APRA Award for Most Played Australian Work Overseas for the rock n? roll classic Highway to Hell, written by Bon Scott and the 2010 APRA Songwriters of the Year Angus and Malcolm Young The song was released way back in 1979, but continues to prove that old is gold.

Along with details of special Music Awards guest presenters and performers, APRA (Australasian Performing Right Association) is proud to announce that MARY LOPEZ AM will receive the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music at the 2012 APRA Music Awards.

Chosen by the APRA Board of Writer and Publisher Directors, the TED ALBERT AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICES TO AUSTRALIAN MUSIC has been bestowed upon some of Australia?s most respected music industry heavyweights including Don Burrows, Michael Chugg, Slim Dusty, Triple J, Bill Armstrong, Angus & Malcolm Young, Roger Davies, Denis Handlin AM, the late Jimmy Little and last year?s recipient Paul Kelly for their contribution in shaping and developing the Australian music landscape.

Mary has been responsible for dozens of other major public events including ?An Australian Christmas? at Darling Harbour, the NSW Premier?s Concert, the World Indigenous People?s Conference Opening and Closing Ceremonies and many more.

Mary?s passion for promoting and nurturing talented young people led her to co-found the Talent Development Project (TDP) in 1991, a widely respected music industry training program which prepares gifted young performers for careers in the music and entertainment industry. She has been the Artistic Director of this unique scheme since its inception. Mary?s ability to identify the potential in young performers has been shown by the success of the program. Tina joins us just ahead of a national orchestral tour scheduled for June to August.
Also performing at the APRA Music Awards will be TEX PERKINS, another bona-fide legend and founder of seminal bands Beasts of Bourbon, The Cruel Sea and Dark Horses. Most recently Tex has been channeling another legend in Johnny Cash receiving a Helpmann Award for Best Contemporary Concert, for THE
MAN IN BLACK where he takes to the stage as Cash for two hours of magnificent music interwoven with the story of his rise to stardom, his fight for survival and his eventual redemption.

Also performing at the 2012 APRA Music Awards will be the wonderful BOB EVANS (aka Kevin Mitchell). Renaissance man Mitchell has had a wonderful career with band Jebediah and his alter ego Bob Evans showing his skills as a champion songwriter and troubadour. His performance at the APRA Music Awards
preceeds an appearance at Splendour In The Grass under his original persona of Kevin Mitchell performing 50 Years of Bob Dylan!, where he will team up with Holly Throsby, Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe) and Patience Hodgson (The Grates) as well as surprise guests.

With a restless creative energy that has seen him make a killer solo album, join forces in numerous projects and supergroups including The Wrights and Hot Rollers as well as being founder and co-vocalist of a little band called Spiderbait, KRAM joins the APRA Music Awards as a special guest performer. An accomplished singer-songwriter, drummer and musical all-rounder, expect the unexpected when KRAM hits the stage.

We all know her voice by now. The wonderful talent that is KATE MILLER-HEIDKE joins us as a special guest performer at the 2012 APRA Music Awards.

Following double-platinum sales for her last album (2008?s Curiouser), sets at Coachella, international dates supporting Ben Folds, acclaimed opera performances in Australia and the UK, Kate Miller-Heidke has returned with her panoramic new album Nightflight, her first solo album in three years which debuted at #2 on the national ARIA Chart.

Singer-songwriter and performer extraordinaire BERTIE BLACKMAN rose to fame with her debut album in 2004, Headway, which came after years of prolific
performances in which she developed a dedicated following. Bertie delivers pop music with depth. Her voice is seductive, her lyrics are inventive and honest and she mesmerizes as a live performer. "When I?m playing music, I just disappear into what's going on," she says.

Touted as a ?human powerhouse? (The Australian) and ?prodigious chanteuse? (Rolling Stone), ascendant pop songstress SOPHIA BROUS (known as BROUS) brings to the APRA Music Awards an uncompromising vision for pop. Her songs evoke the widescreen majesty of Scott Walker and classic melodies of Morricone's Mina - unforgettable choruses crowned by Brous' extraordinarily expressive voice.

Steve Gagne ? Food Energetics [1 eBook - EPUB, MOBI, 1 JPG ...

Steve Gagne ? Food Energetics ? The Spiritual, Emotional, and Nutritional Power of What We Eat

Explains how food imparts a living wisdom that is separate from the science of nutrient values

? Offers an approach to diet from the perspective of ancient peoples, who understood how the energetic qualities of food affect both physical and spiritual health

? Includes a comprehensive catalog of the energetic properties of myriad foods from chicken, beef, and potatoes to garlic, avocados, zucchini, and grapefruit

Food is more than simply fuel. It imparts a living wisdom that is beyond the science and mechanics of calories, grams, and nutrient values. Ancient peoples, through their relationships with the plants and animals providing their food, understood that their food conveyed the unique energetic qualities of its source, such as swiftness from wild deer and groundedness from root vegetables. With the rise of agribusiness and industrial food production, people have become disconnected from the sources of their food and are no longer able to register the subtle rhythms, harmony, and energies that food can convey. This separation has thrown the basic human-food relationship out of balance to the detriment of human consciousness.

In Food Energetics, Steve Gagne shows how to revitalize our connection to food and remedy our physical and psychic imbalances with the wisdom of food energetics. He provides a comprehensive catalog of foods and their corresponding energetic properties and explains how each food affects us at the deepest spiritual level. By demonstrating how to plan meals that incorporate both dominant and compliant foods, he shows how to provide truly healthy cuisine that nourishes the body and the soul.

Whole Grains Cut Colorectal Cancer Risk

In the British Medical Journal article published in 2011, researchers analyzed several previous studies and determined that whole grains reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. People enjoying three servings of whole grains a day ? that?s ? cup of oatmeal, a slice of good bread, or a ? cup of brown rice ? also enjoy a 17% reduction in risk of the development of colon cancer.

Whole grain is high in fiber, which helps to move the digestive process along and sweep any carcinogens out of the colon quicker. In addition, fiber molecules are excellent at binding carcinogens and hormones in food that would otherwise be absorbed if the grain were processed and the beneficial fiber removed.

Whole grains are also excellent sources of non-inflamatory protein, healthy omega-3 fats and complex carbohydrates. A skimpy salad feels like a full-on dinner when it?s served over rice or wrapped into a multi-grain tortilla. So find some yummy whole grain foods that you enjoy and live it up with that happy, healthy colon.

On Working @ Home: Balancing Work And Family ? 5 Tips To Keep ...

By Jill Hart

The balancing act ? every mother?s nightmare. Many days we feel like circus jugglers with more plates in the air than we can possibly handle. The summer adds to the insanity with the kids at home, swimming lessons to attend and numerous other distractions. Over the years, however, I?ve learned a few secrets that help me keep things in perspective:

Keep God First

In Matthew 6:33 we?re told to seek God?s kingdom above all else. Like the apostle Peter who saw Jesus walking on water and asked to join him ? as soon as we take our eyes off of Christ and begin to doubt, we sink.

In order to keep our eyes on Him, we need to be in relationship with Him. Schedule time in your day to read God?s Word and to talk with Him in prayer. Surround yourself with friends who love the Lord and who will point you back to Him when you struggle.

?

Don?t Be Afraid To Choose Family Over Business

As business owners, we do our best to maintain professionalism even when we?re working at our kitchen table with kids hanging on to our ankles. We have deadlines, client demands to meet and emails and phone calls to return. However, there comes a time in every work-at-home moms life when family simply must come first.

It may be that your child is struggling or it could be an extended family member in crisis. The point is, it?s ok to step away from your business when absolutely necessary. Be respectful ? let your clients know that you will be gone and when you plan to return. But don?t be afraid to set business aside for a time to be there for people who need you.

Plan Ahead

This is by far my biggest struggle. I?m a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of girl. I love working from home because every day is different and, for the most part, I?m in control of what I do and when. However, when summer rolls around, there are vacations to take, sunny days to enjoy and kids needing attention. So, I?ve had to learn to plan ahead.

What works for me is to plot everything out weekly, giving each day a title for both home and business. So, Mondays are usually laundry days on the home front and ?clean out inbox? days for business. Tuesdays tend to be more relaxed with maybe a trip to the park or the swimming pool with some writing to be done in the early morning. Find what works for you and make the best possible use of your time.

jill hart buttona On Working @ Home: Balancing Work And Family 5 Tips To Keep You Sane This Summer

Plan Time Off

Summertime is meant to be a more relaxed pace. Even if your family can?t afford to take a week off and fly to the beach (I wish!) you can still plan days off to do special things. We often take long weekend trips to nearby cities and do inexpensive things like visiting the historic areas of the city and playing sports like disc golf.

It may seem backwards, but with some extra effort you can turn this summer into a relaxing, enjoyable time. Make it a point to spend the quality with your family that you so often wish for (yep, I do that, too.).

How about you? What tips do you have to keep sane this summer?
