House prices in Canada rose by 5.2 per cent in May compared to last year.
Prices jumped in all five markets followed by the Canadian Real Estate Association?s Home Price Index. Greater Toronto led the way, with prices up by 7.9 per cent. Calgary and Greater Vancouver followed with rises of 4.8 per cent and 3.3 per cent respectively.
Year-over-year gains had been slowing through the end of last year, adds the report, and have stabilized at close to five per cent so far this year.
Year-over-year price gains again picked up speed in Calgary, with May marking the largest year-over-year gain there in nearly two years. The increase lifted the MLS? HPI for Calgary to its highest level since August 2008.
By contrast, year-over-year gains continued to shrink in Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Price gains in Greater Toronto and Montreal held their ground in May compared to April. Greater Toronto also remains the hottest market tracked by the index, with single family homes in its urban core continuing to sell briskly.
?While price gains overall are running steady, diverging trends among local markets show clearly that all real estate is truly local,? said Wayne Moen, CREA President. ?Because price trends are different between markets and within them, anyone buying or selling a home should consult with their REALTOR? to best understand how the housing market is shaping up locally.?
Among the Benchmark housing types tracked by the index, two-storey single family homes continued posting the strongest year-over-year growth in May (6.7%). Gains for one-storey single family homes (5.8%) also surpassed the rise in the overall index, while townhouses and apartments saw more modest gains (3.3% and 2.95 respectively).
?Home price gains in Greater Toronto continue to eclipse those in other markets. Gains are also starting to pick up speed in Calgary after months of stability,? said Gregory Klump, CREA?s Chief Economist. ?As always, prospects for home price trends depend on buyers? willingness to pay and sellers? expectations and motivations, both of which are tied to economic, labour market, and interest rate prospects. With European sovereign debt and banking issues likely to cloud the global economic outlook, Canadian interest rates will remain at or very near current levels. The continuation of low interest rates will continue to support Canadian housing activity and prices for some time to come.?

HAIFA, Israel (AP) -- Grinning and waving, 14 women who survived the horrors of World War II paraded Thursday in an unusual pageant, vying for the honor of being crowned Israel's first "Miss Holocaust Survivor."
Billed by organizers as a celebration of life, the event also stirred controversy. In a country where millions have been touched by the Holocaust, many argued that judging aging women who had suffered so much on physical appearance was inappropriate, and even offensive.
"It sounds totally macabre to me," said Colette Avital, chairwoman of Israel's leading Holocaust survivors' umbrella group. "I am in favor of enriching lives, but a one-time pageant masquerading (survivors) with beautiful clothes is not what is going to make their lives more meaningful."
Pageant organizer Shimon Sabag rejected the criticism, saying the winners were chosen based on their personal stories of survival and rebuilding their lives after the war, and physical beauty was only a tiny part of the competition.
"They feel good together. They are having a good time and laughing in the rehearsals," said Sabag, director of Yad Ezer L'Haver, or Helping Hand, which assists needy Holocaust survivors and organized the pageant.
"The fact that so many wanted to participate proves that it's a good idea."
Nearly 300 women from across Israel registered for the competition and contestants were whittled down to the 14 finalists who appeared Thursday.
The contest, part of Helping Hand's annual "cultural" night, included a lavish dinner and music at a Haifa reception hall. Some 600 people attended, including two Cabinet ministers, Moshe Kahlon and Yossi Peled, himself a Holocaust survivor.
The women, ranging in age from 74 to 97, clearly enjoyed themselves. Wearing black dresses, earrings and necklaces, and sporting blue-and-white numbered sashes, they grinned and waved as they were introduced to the adoring audience. Music played as the contestants walked along a red carpet, introduced themselves and described their memories of World War II.
"I have the privilege to show the world that Hitler wanted to exterminate us and we are alive. We are also enjoying life. Thank God it's that way," said Esther Libber, a 74-year-old runner-up who fled her home in Poland as a child, hid in a forest and was rescued by a Polish woman. She said she lost her entire immediate family.
A four-judge panel consisting of three former beauty queens and a geriatric psychiatrist who specializes in treating Holocaust survivors chose the winner. Hava Hershkovitz, a soon-to-be 79-year-old, was banished from her home in Romania in 1941 and sent to a detention camp in the Soviet Union for three years. Today, she lives in an assisted living home run by Helping Hand.
"This place is full of survivors. It puts us at the center of attention so people will care. It's not easy at this age to be in a beauty contest, but we're all doing it to show that we're still here," the silver-haired Hershkovitz said.
Wearing a glittering tiara, she was joined by her granddaughter, Keren Hazan. "I'm very proud of her because she's the most beautiful woman in the room tonight," Hazan said.
In addition to the contestants' accounts of surviving Nazi ghettos and concentration camps, their later contributions to their communities were also considered, Sabag said. Physical appearance was maybe "10 percent" of the criteria, he said, though a cosmetics company was recruited to help the women dress up for the occasion.
"We always tell them to dress well and look good. To think positive and to take care of themselves," Sabag said. "Always look at life with a smile and continue to live."
The thought that physical appearance could even remotely be a factor rubbed some the wrong way. Avital, of the Holocaust survivors' umbrella group, criticized the cosmetics company, saying it was using Holocaust survivors in a cheap marketing stunt to promote their products.
"Why use a beauty contest to show that these people survived and that they're brave?" wondered Lili Haber, a daughter of Holocaust survivors who heads an Israeli organization that assists survivors from Poland. "I think it's awful. I think it's something a decent person shouldn't even think about."
The Holocaust, in which Nazi Germany oversaw the systematic slaughter of 6 million European Jews, plays a unique role in Israeli society. The country gained independence in the wake of the Holocaust, serving as a refuge for hundreds of thousands of people who survived the genocide.
Nearly 200,000 aging survivors live in Israel today, and the country's annual Holocaust Day is one of the most solemn occasions on the calendar. Restaurants and cinemas close, and the country comes to a standstill as sirens wail for two minutes. Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, frequently make references to the Holocaust when discussing the threat they believe a nuclear-armed Iran would pose to the Jewish state.
Thursday's contest was among the many unconventional beauty pageants that have sprouted up over the years. The war-torn countries of Angola and Cambodia have held "Miss Landmine" contests for survivors of land mine explosions, Star Trek fans enjoy the "Miss Klingon Empire" contest in Atlanta, and plus-sized women in Thailand compete for the honor of "Miss Jumbo Queen." There are also a senior citizens' pageants in the U.S.
Gal Mor, editor of the popular Israeli blog "Holes in the Net," said Thursday's pageant was well-intentioned but misguided.
"Why should a decayed, competitive institution that emphasizes women's appearance be used as inspiration, instead of allowing them to tell their story without gimmicks?" he wrote. "This is one step short of `Survivor-Holocaust' or `Big Brother Auschwitz.' It leaves a bad taste. Holocaust survivors should be above all this."

Between 1997-2007, home prices increased by nearly 70 percent. In that same period, college costs grew even more rapidly, by over 80 percent. As a result, average student loan debt has grown to over $25,000. The total amount owed exceeds our country's collective credit card debt. What is going on?
There is neither a single nor a simple reason for the exploding cost of college. Quality higher education has always been relatively expensive. In fact, it is often more costly to deliver than what is paid by tuition. Research, philanthropy, and, for public institutions, tax dollars make up the difference. However, cash-strapped states are now reducing their support to either meet other needs or to just balance their budgets. As a result, students and their parents are having to pay more -- much more in many cases -- to cover the formerly subsidized costs of instruction. But this shift in support, from tax payers to students, doesn't tell the full story. Tuition and fees are growing at private institutions, as well.
Little noticed is the fact that an increasing number of new federal, state, college system and accreditor requirements are being imposed upon institutions of higher education. According to the American Council on Education, over 150 new rules, regulations and requirements became effective after the 2008 reauthorization of the federal Higher Education Act. Some of the most onerous and costly of these went live in July of 2011.
An example is the U.S. Department of Education's so called "program integrity" rules and the DOE's willingness to withhold Title IV financial aid from students if host institutions do not comply with a growing list of federal requirements. These extend to requiring every institution that offers an online program to seek "authorization" from 54 separate jurisdictions, even if they have but a single student in one of these jurisdictions. While such "authorization" may allow the institutions to cross a state line for purposes of Internet-delivered instruction, it does not permit them to recruit, advertise, meet, or be "physically present." Those actions require a separate process of "registration." In some states, this process requires the review of hundreds, if not thousands, of documents, fees that can run over $100,000, a site visit, and can take over a year to complete. These rules apply to all, public and private, for profit and non-profit institutions. Between fees (which are increasing as several states seek new income), labor and specialized expertise, the cost of compliance for all institutions has risen to an estimated $500,000,000, all of which can be expected to be passed on in future tuition increases. The alternative is for students to lose their eligibility for Pell Grants and Stafford loans.
Other requirements include the submission of all proposed certificate programs to the Secretary of Education for approval; requiring instruction to be measured by clock hours or "seat time" (imagine doing this online); filing reports on campus crime and student alcohol use when there is no physical campus; and so forth. When combined with other new state and local regulations, institutions have been required to hire additional administrators and compliance officers to ensure that they are not in violation of these various rules.
While federal courts have recently ruled against the Department of Education in regard to some elements of these rules, the "genie" is nonetheless "out-of-the-bottle." Nothing in either the initial or appellate rulings limit states from persisting in their various requirements, nor from issuing "cease and desist orders" to those who fail to comply.
College leaders do need to do a better job of reducing the expense associated with going to college. Passing the costs of lost subsidies or budget increases along to students in the form of higher tuition and fees is not sustainable. Yet, these leaders are going to need help from the politicians, law makers, and bureaucrats who have failed to see the connection between over-regulation and the rising cost of higher education. Informed analysis suggests that most of the new federal regulations have been imposed as a result of the actions of very few. However, rather than employing existent powers to deal with such miscreants, ideologues within the administration have elected to proceed down the regulatory path in search of evil for-profit institutions while, ala Dick Cheney, spraying all of higher education with their "bird shot."

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Often these days, the first order of business at European Union summits isn't the continent's dreadful financial crisis.
It's getting to know the people around the table.
The group of leaders that will meet this week in Brussels is a much different crew from the one that met in October 2009, when the crisis in Europe first erupted with the news that Greece was in deep trouble.
Gone is the colorful and sometimes embarrassing Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi, replaced by the technocratic Mario Monti. Europe has said "au revoir" to hyperkinetic French President Nicolas Sarkozy and "bonjour" to the altogether more sedate Francois Hollande. The glower of Britain's Gordon Brown has given way the youthful countenance of David Cameron.
At this summit, leaders had been preparing to shake hands with new Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras ? until emergency eye surgery forced him to send regrets.
The revolving door of European leaders raises the question of how Europe can implement bold and swift decisions when it's not even clear who'll be in charge a few months from now.
Carefully cultivated alliances can get swept away in the swirl of parliamentary politics. How, the pundits ask, can Europe come together on a united vision for the future when instability lies at the very heart of the continent's democratic system?
Of the 27 countries in the EU, 14 have switched leaders since the crisis began a little over two and a half years ago. Only one major national leader has remained a constant throughout the crisis: German Chancellor Angela Merkel. And her staying power, at the top of Europe's biggest economy, has bolstered Germany's dominant role in European decision-making.
After all, it's safe to say that few people are waiting for Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov to lead the way.
Changes at the top can have a profound influence on Europe's balance of power. Hollande, a strong champion of boosting growth, has helped tilt Europe away from the stark austerity path charted by Merkel and Sarkozy. Mario Draghi, who replaced Jean-Claude Trichet as chief of the European Central Bank late last year, has largely ditched his predecessor's cautious strategies and breathed new life into markets.
It seems that almost every time the leaders meet, which is often, there's a new face. At the most recent summit, in May, it was Hollande. Late last year, leaders had to acquaint themselves with Italy's Monti, Spain's Mariano Rajoy and Greece's Lucas Papademos, all in the space of a couple of months.
Beyond fanciful notions of presidents and prime ministers needing name tags or surreptitiously peeking at the cheat sheets (with photos) that the EU helpfully prints out for journalists, the rapidly changing cast of characters has caused many to ask: Has it slowed the response to the financial crisis?
Perhaps. Summit diplomacy is to a large extent about building personal relationships.
"The men and women in the highest circles of international politics are people readers rather than paper readers, and therefore place more faith in their own direct personal impressions than in more traditional, written forms of diplomatic communication," Jan Melissen, of the Clingendael international relations institute in the Netherlands, wrote in a study of summit diplomacy.
The bottom line is that it takes time for the leaders to size each other up and to earn each other's trust. Merkel and Sarkozy, for example, had difficulties working together in the early months of the financial crisis. Sarkozy criticized Germany in public for its failure to act. And when Sarkozy led camera crews into a meeting, Merkel reportedly told him, "I won't let you do this to me," and made them leave.
But with the passage of time, and under the pressure of the crisis, they developed such a close partnership that they came to be dubbed "Merkozy."
As leaders of the European currency union's biggest economies, the two regularly met before each EU summit to hash out common positions. They then presented their decisions to other leaders pretty much as a fait accompli. And during the French presidential campaign this year, Merkel declared her support for Sarkozy ? refusing to meet with Hollande.
Now that relationship's gone. Merkel and Hollande sharply disagree about the way forward for Europe. The divergence at the center of Europe has created fresh worries about the continent's fate.
Observers say it can take time to rebuild carefully nurtured national alliances.
"Through their personal exchanges at summit meetings, leaders familiarize each other with the domestic political pressures and constraints they face back home," said David Shorr, an expert on summitry at the Stanley Foundation, an Iowa-based organization that promotes multilateralism. "The personal trust piece of this has to be established freshly with each new leader who joins the club."
But Shorr noted that personal chemistry may count for little when nations start pulling apart on the issues.
"You don't need to know President Hollande well to recognize the French elections themselves as a pretty clear weather vane for the shifting political winds," he said.

You, the seller, are part of the package. If you can't be the best or the most affordable, get back by being creative. If you can make the buyer's purchasing and bargaining experience quite memorable for them, rest assured they'll be back for more.
Be truthful about what your customers should expect and always get to the point. Don't bore your buyers with long-winded sales pitches. Cut to the chase and let your product/service do the talking. Build good rapport so that buyers will see you as dependable and someone they can trust so that they will be more than willing to part from their hard-earned money.
If your buyers are happy, they'll tell their friends about it, and their friends will tell their friends, and so on. Your business will have grown exponentially by word of mouth, and all because you made a customer satisfied.
Customer service should be your top priority, and buyer satisfaction ought to be paramount, but only within reason. You have yourself to think about as well. Give in to every whim or demand and you'll be closing shop long before you close a deal. Take control of the negotiation process. Remember that buyers nowadays are market-savvy and they'll come prepared to whittle you down to the bare minimum while snatching as many concessions as they can get their hands on.
A smart buyer will wait for you to talk first, but if you can get them to name their price first, then you hold the advantage. Try asking about their budget. They will give you the lowest possible figure, and it's your job to make a balance between what they are willing to pay and how much you are willing to accept.
If a compromise cannot be reached, know when to say 'no.' Don't treat a deal like your very life depended on it. If you can show the customer that you are able to walk away from a potential sale, then you hold power over them. Believe it or not, they will respect you more for it and may even return to do business in the future. Buyers won't want to deal with overeager sellers who fall apart so easily and try too hard to please.
Just as it does for sellers, sales negotiation training works for buyers as well. If you are the buyer, having other options is the trump card in any negotiation strategy. Never appear desperate and needy or you'll have practically given the seller permission to milk you for all you're worth. Know also when to walk away from any product or service. If you can do that, expect more trading to tip in your favor.
So next time you find yourself at the negotiating table, wear your sales negotiation training like a badge and negotiate your way to a better deal.

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamist Mohamed Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected president whose powers have been curbed by the military, toured his palatial new residence - where ousted leader Hosni Mubarak once lived - and began work on Monday to form a coalition government.
Declared winner on Sunday a week after a nail-biting run-off vote that pitted him against an ex-military officer, the Islamist faces the challenge of meeting sky-high expectations in a nation tired of turmoil while the economy is on the ropes.
But his campaign pledge to complete the revolution that toppled Mubarak last year but left the pillars of his rule intact will come up against the entrenched interests of the generals who have been in charge of the transition to democracy.
Shortly before the presidential vote, the newly elected Islamist-led parliament was dissolved by the army based on a court order and the generals issued a decree putting limits on the president's remit, which cuts into Mursi's powers to act, but exposing him to blame for any failures.
Further afield, his win has had an immediate impact beyond Egypt's borders, inspiring Islamists who have risen up against autocrats across the Middle East and swept to power in North Africa. Israel worries its peace deal with Egypt, never warm, will cool further. Palestinians in Gaza, however, are delighted.
Iran saw his election as an "Islamic awakening" - though Tehran and the Muslim Brotherhood follow different, often opposed forms of the faith. Its Fars news agency published an interview in which Mursi called for restoring severed ties to build strategic "balance". A Mursi aide said he gave the interview 10 days ago.
A security official said Mursi and his wife took a tour of their new home, once Mubarak's main residence - a dramatic change of fortunes for a former political prisoner whose group was pursued remorselessly during Mubarak's 30-year rule.
An aide said Mursi then went to the Defence Ministry for talks with the head of the military council Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and the army-appointed Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri for talks on steps towards forming a new government, a visit rich with symbolism about where real power lies.
As president, Mursi can appoint the cabinet. His aides say he has already reached out to politicians from outside the Brotherhood such as reformist Mohamed ElBaradei, who has yet to publicly respond. But legislative powers remain with the army while the parliament is dissolved, restricting his power to act.
One pressing concern - on which many Egyptians are likely to judge his performance - will to be to revive the economy. Monday's stock market rally, at least partly fuelled by relief that the vote and result passed off without violence, may encourage the new president, but he still has to prove to wary longer-term investors that Egypt is on the road to recovery.
Egyptian newspapers greeted Mursi's win over Ahmed Shafik, Mubarak's last prime minister, as a victory for the people, although many more liberal-minded Egyptians worry his conservative group will slowly whittle away at social freedoms.
"The revolution reaches the republican palace," wrote Al-Shorouk newspaper. Another, Al-Akhbar, quoted from Morsy's victory speech: "I am a servant of the people and an employee of the citizens". It is a sentiment widely spoken, this sense of, at last, perhaps having an Egyptian leader who can be "fired".
Celebrations in Cairo's Tahrir Square - theatre of the revolution that overthrew Mubarak - extended through the night. Some Brotherhood followers were still celebrating and a little surprised by their victory that broke a six-decade tradition of president's plucked from the military.
STREET PRESSURE
"It was a little surprising that the army acknowledged his win," said 40-year-old teacher Adel Mohamed who was in the square when the result was declared after a nail-biting week's wait since the vote. "The pressure from the street, from the revolution, will give Morsy strength to negotiate."
Those in Egypt and beyond who feared a win for Shafik might have spelled the end of the Arab Spring acknowledged a triumph for the popular will, and for the army which accepted it. From Syria's opposition came word that Cairo was again a "source of hope" for a people "facing a repressive war of annihilation".
But millions of Egyptians, and the Western powers, looked on with unease at the prospect of the long-suppressed Brotherhood making good on its dream of an Islamic state for the Arab world's biggest nation.
Israel has been particularly nervous, urging its neighbour to respect their peace deal. It worries that the Brotherhood's win will embolden Palestinian Islamists opposed to Israel.
"Darkness in Egypt," headlined Israeli paper Yedioth Ahronoth. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he "respected" the result.
"Mursi's victory is most likely to strengthen the hand of Hamas in its fight against Israel because it will give it a moral boost," said political scientist Mustapha al-Sayyed, adding this could strain ties with Israel long used to the cool but steady relationship it had with Mubarak.
But the army, determined not to see its $1.3 billion in U.S. military aid a year jeopardised, will likely ensure ties are not undermined even if the relationship sours, diplomats say.
Pledging to uphold international treaties, in a gesture to Israel, Mursi said in his first televised address as president-elect that he would work with others to see the democratic revolution through.
"There is no room now for the language of confrontation," he said, a message addressed not just to the army but to the young, urban revolutionaries who launched last year's uprising only to see the Brotherhood dominate the political scene afterwards.
One of the most influential revolutionary youth groups greeted Mursi's win as a victory for last year's uprising.
"We have defeated the candidate of Mubarak's military state, the candidate of the corrupt 'deep state' that we are fed up with," said the April 6 Youth movement.
"Starting today we will work as one body for Egypt."
COMPROMISE
Western powers congratulated Mursi, who received a phone call from U.S. President Barack Obama, offering help.
The White House said in a statement: "The president underscored that the United States will continue to support Egypt's transition to democracy and stand by the Egyptian people as they fulfil the promise of their revolution."
Mursi may have little choice but to compromise with the army, and Brotherhood sources said a package of agreements discussed with generals last week could soon be announced.
The Brotherhood's political gains, first winning the biggest bloc in parliament and then running for president, had rattled the military. With the help of a Mubarak-era judiciary, the military council, SCAF, dissolved parliament on the eve of the presidential vote, then gave itself the legislative power.
Critics at home and in the West called it a "soft coup."
Senior Brotherhood officials say they have been negotiating in the past week to change some of that, though both sides deny any haggling over the result of the presidential vote itself.
"President Mursi and his team have been in talks with the military council to bring back the democratically elected parliament and other issues," Essam Haddad, a senior Brotherhood official, told Reuters on Monday.
Brotherhood sources told Reuters they hoped the army might allow a partial recall of parliament and other concessions in return for Mursi exercising his powers to name a government and presidential administration in ways the army approves of - notably by extending appointments across the political spectrum.
Military officials have confirmed discussions in the past few days but had no immediate comment on the latest talks.
Brotherhood officials have said they will press on with street protests to pressure the army but this, along with a number of other contentious issues including to whom and where Mursi swears his oath of office, could be settled soon.
The army wants Mursi sworn in on June 30, meeting a deadline it set itself for handing over Egypt to "civilian rule" - although the military's influence will go on long beyond that.

ABC News' Shushannah Walshe and Arlette Saenz report:
The Remainders?
The lavish weekend retreat hosted for Mitt Romney's top donors in the scenic mountains of Park City, Utah, was full of standout moments and spottings of wealthy donors, GOP stars, and Romney family members. Below is a collection of the colorful variety we witnessed throughout the weekend but couldn't quite fit into our stories.
Romney Brothers
All five Romney brothers were on hand for the weekend. We briefly chatted with a few:
Friday, eldest son Tagg Romney said he was "feeling good" about the weekend and said all five brothers enjoyed their stint on "The Conan Show" earlier this week.
But, it was Ben Romney who liked it the most, apparently. We asked the rarely seen, second youngest Romney brother, who is a doctor in Utah, what his best moment of the weekend was as he arrived for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's speech at the Saturday night reception and he replied, "Going on Conan."
As he was heading to the media insight panel with Karl Rove, we spoke with Matt Romney, who said he was touched by all the donors and attendees who had come from all over the country to show support for his father, specifically mentioning a couple originally from El Salvador who now live in Miami. We also spotted Matt walking across the street to the same private dinner at the Golden Hirsch Inn that was attended by Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who is often mentioned as a possible running mate for Romney.
But while Matt had a simple walk to his Saturday evening dinner, Craig Romney, dressed in a grey suit with ankle length slim pants, drove away in a silver Hybrid Prius.
Although he was there, we did not see Josh Romney over the weekend. We did spot Mitt Romney's brother, Scott Romney, walking around the Chateaux at Silver Lake on Friday and Saturday.
Potential Veep Spottings
A number of potential vice presidential contenders were in attendance for the weekend retreat, and we were able to spot a few.
Ohio Sen. Rob Portman strolled from the Chateaux at Silver Lake to the Golden Hirsch Inn Saturday evening as he was to appear as a "special guest" at one of the private donor dinners. We chatted with him about the retreat, VP talk, and kayaking. Does he get annoyed by the constant veep chatter or does he like it? Read the chuckle.
Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan sped over to the retreat Saturday morning in a golf cart, waving to reporters, who were kept at a distance, as his golf cart entered the enclosed garage. Ryan arrived at the evening reception, where former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush spoke, with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and when Ryan left the reception, he was seen hopping into a van with donors heading to a private dinner at an undisclosed location.
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was spotted arriving at the Chateaux early Friday in an SUV that ducked into the garage.
Sen. John Thune was on hand Friday and Saturday and spoke with us in the lobby Saturday morning. Thune's wife, Kimberly, said her favorite of Friday night's reception at Olympic Park was the performance by the ski jumpers, describing the athletic spectacle as "Wow." Her husband joked she was "off message" because she didn't cite Mitt Romney's speech as her favorite moment from the night.
Just moments before, Kimberly Thune was saved from a potential fashion mishap when a Romney staffer came to her aid using a Tide stain stick on a spot on her red and white dress.
And while we never set our eyes on former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, the reporters stationed on the sidewalk across the street from the Chateaux were duped many times by some Pawlenty lookalikes walking to and from the resorts.
Speeding Golf Carts
SUVs and town cars weren't the only mode of transportation over the weekend. Attendees hopped into golf carts that transported them between the Chateaux and the Stein Eriksen Lodge.
On Friday, Mary Matalin whizzed by, and Saturday morning, Paul Ryan arrived in a golf cart and waved at reporters.
Former Secretary of State James Baker and former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, who will also head up Romney's transition if he is elected, climbed into one together, but not before we could ask Leavitt his impressions of the panels. He said he came away with confidence that the Romney campaign has "a very impressive group of people supporting this campaign and we have a very good shot at winning."
Later in the day, Karl Rove, in a blue blazer, dashed out and described his own panel on "media insight" as "damn good." A few minutes later Romney counsel Ben Ginsberg also got into a golf cart.
Saturday evening, former Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey zoomed by at the close of the evening reception.
Gentlemanly Gesture
As House Majority Leader Eric Cantor left the evening reception, he walked with his wife to their SUV and walked around the car with her as she got into the backseat. Cantor then closed the door and walked around to the other side to join her.
Dining
Former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff was spotted having lunch outside Friday in a sunny spot at the Chateaux.
At the end of Saturday's reception, donors climbed aboard buses and vans to head to private dinners at undisclosed locations, where they dined with "special guests."
There were kosher alternatives at every meal for observant Jewish donors attending the retreat. They also had a minyan, a quorum of at least 10 men who pray together, on Friday night and Saturday morning, the Jewish sabbath, which was attended by 12 men and five women.
Quote of the Weekend: "I'm tired of boozing," one wealthy New York City bundler said to us Saturday evening. He was spotted leaving one of Saturday' evening's private dinners early and told us he was tired from a weekend of chatting, schmoozing and, well, drinking.

Redmond seems to have more grandiose ideas for Connected Car than it's let on before, judging from a recent help wanted ad on its site. Reading more like PR for its car-based plans, the job notice waxes poetically about using "the full power of the Microsoft ecosystem" in an upcoming auto platform with tech such as Kinect, Azure, Windows 8 and Windows Phone. Those products would use face-tracking, speech and gestures to learn your driving habits and safely guide or entertain you on the road, according to the software engineer listing. It also hints that everything would be tied together using Azure's cloud platform, so that your favorite music or shortcuts would follow you around, even if you're not piloting your own rig. All that makes its original Connected Car plans from 2009 seem a bit laughable -- check the original video for yourself after the break.

The time comes when every parent has to assist their child in making the right choice of university or college. This all important decision should not be left until the last moment but requires considerable time, thought, and research. When you consider the fact that three to four years of your child?s life plus an investment of thousands of dollars into his/her education is required, it is prudent to get involved as a parent.
So how do you ensure that you?re making the right decision?
The first thing that parents need to do is know your child. You should know what his interests and gifting are. If your child loves the Arts, then you cannot be, or should not be forcing him to pursue the Sciences. You should also know whether or not your teen works best independently or in a group setting; or whether he learns better in a small classroom setting. Is your teen easily distracted and lacks self-discipline or is he focused and disciplined? All these factors will play a major part in your choice of college or university.
Secondly, much research has to be done on the programs that your child is interested in and compare and contrast each college/university?s offering of that program. Which ones are best geared towards his career goals and which subjects are a better fit for what he?s interested in.
Thirdly, cost is usually a significant factor in coming to a decision. Therefore, after narrowing the choices down based on the first two factors, you must compare the cost of your child studying at one particular college as against another. In addition to tuition, your finances will determine whether or not your child can attend a local college/university or one away from home. Can he attend the more expensive Ivy League university or will it be more affordable for him to attend an equally reputable but less expensive one?
Fourthly, it is also a good thing to consider campus spirit as you?d want your teen to enjoy campus life. What clubs does each university/college offer and what opportunities are there for self-development or for community service?
Lastly, it is good to visit the various campuses and get a feel of the environment in which your teen will be. On campus tours, you?ll meet professors and lecturers and hear directly from them on their accessibility.
This is indeed one of the most exciting times in a parents and teens life and after all the research is done, both parties should feel comfortable and happy with the decision made.
